Trade for prosperity

Oral health is an important factor in general health and quality of life. Certain medications and health conditions can increase the risk of oral health issues. Knowing the risks and taking the right preventative steps can help prevent these issues occurring.

Dry mouth – Saliva plays a key role in preventing tooth decay. Medications for conditions such as depression, epilepsy, asthma or high blood pressure can cause reduced saliva flow.

Reduced dexterity – Challenges with dexterity can make it harder to effectively remove plaque. Plaque contains bacteria, which play an essential role in the development of tooth decay and gum disease.

Lifestyle factors – High sugar diet, smoking, stress and pregnancy  can all have an impact on oral health.

A good oral care routine at home will help to keep teeth and gums healthy. Speak with your GP or pharmacist if you have any concerns.

Top tips from dentist, Dr Julia Hurry, on how to look after your teeth:

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, at night and on one other occasion
  • Spit don’t rinse after toothbrushing to avoid washing the fluoride protection away
  • A fluoride mouthrinse such as Colgate® FluoriGard Daily Rinse* used at a different time to toothbrushing will help to prevent tooth decay
  • Ensure you clean every surface of each tooth and the gumline thoroughly
  • Change your toothbrush every 3 months to prevent worn bristles
  • A toothpaste with an anti-bacterial technology such as Colgate® Total can help prevent the build-up of plaque bacteria on teeth and gums
  • A medicated mouthrinse such as Colgate® PerioGard CHX Mouthwash will help fight the cause of gum problems
