Trade for prosperity

Dry mouth is a condition resulting from reduced or absent saliva flow and while it is rarely the sign of anything serious, it can be very unpleasant and uncomfortable.2

While it is not a ‘disease’, dry mouth may be a symptom of medical conditions, a side effect of radiation therapy or a side effect of over 400 medications.3

Medical Conditions

One of the most common conditions that can cause dry mouth is Sjögren’s Syndrome, a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that occurs predominantly in women aged 40-60.4

Cancer Therapy

Dry Mouth is the most common complaint associated with head and neck radiation therapy.5 Some cancer chemotherapeutic drugs can also change saliva composition and flow which may also cause dry mouth.5

Dry mouth is a common complaint affecting approximately 20% of the elderly population, however this is related to the medications commonly taken by the older population rather than age itself.3,5
