We’re Ecotricity – founders of the Global Green Energy Movement. We’re not like other energy suppliers – we're not-for-dividend and we use the money from our customers’ bills to build new sources of green energy ourselves. We call this turning ‘Bills into Mills’.
Switch to Britain’s greenest energy company today – just quote NPA so we know where you heard about us.
Here are our top tips to cut your energy bills whilst taking care of the planet.
- Turn off standby
According to Energy Saving Trust, the average UK household spends £55 (45kgCO2e) each year on appliances left on standby. By turning things off at the wall when not in use, you’ll be more aware of your energy usage habits and can make smarter decisions in the home to save on your bills.
- Make chores more efficient
Wash your clothes at a lower temperature. Washing your clothes at 30ºC (rather than 40ºC) cuts your costs by 38%, according to Which?, the UK’s Consumer Champion. Plus, by washing your clothes on a colder, shorter cycle can extend the lifetime of your clothes and reduce your carbon footprint – up to 60% of laundry’s carbon footprint comes from heating water, according to WWF.
Want to go a step further? Switch to an Economy 7 tariff to get cheaper electricity at night and use these hours to do your laundry, dishwashers and other electricity-heavy chores like charging an EV.
- Monitor your energy usage
Get a smart meter and track your usage on your In-Home Display (IHD). Energy Saving estimates that using your IHD can cut your electricity usage by 2.8% and gas by 2% – with corresponding CO2 savings too. With an IHD, you can work out when and where energy is being used, helping you to make smarter, more energy efficient choices.
- Get smart with your heating.
Think about when you actually need it on and the temperature it is at. You could set your heating timer to turn off an hour before you leave in the morning, or before you go to bed – your home will still stay warm, and you’ll save an hour of heating each day.
- Swap out appliances in the kitchen
Try using other appliances to cook your food – from air fryers to slow cookers, there are a lot of appliances which can save you money when cooking. If you’re cooking for one or two people, air fryers are the more cost-effective option compared to an electric oven, whereas slow cookers are good for batch cooking.
Ever since we delivered 100% renewable electricity to our first customer in 1996, we’ve been proud to be Britain’s greenest energy company.
Almost 30 years on, there are a lot of energy companies out there who claim to offer green energy. But do their claims hold water? Who’s telling the truth and who’s greenwashing? And how can you tell?
The facts speak for themselves.
We’re proud to be a Which? Recommended Provider for energy and a Which? Recommended Eco Provider, as well as ranking top in the Citizens Advice customer service table.
We’ve built 24 wind parks all over the country, which are home to 74 beautiful windmills, as well as sun parks utilising the latest bifacial panels. And we’re always planning more, as fast as possible.
We’re the only energy company in the world certified as vegan and our green gasmills are busy making sustainable gas from grass.
When you’re with us, every penny of your bill makes a difference in building more green electricity, making genuinely green gas and helping to make fossil fuels a thing of the past.
Ecotricity is also the only energy company in the world certified as vegan by both the Vegan Society and Viva!, the vegan charity.
As you’d expect, vegan energy is produced without involving animals. Renewable electricity from solar, wind and geothermal is therefore vegan.
Gas is more complicated. Several big energy suppliers use by-products from livestock farming in anaerobic digestion vats to produce biomethane, which is then delivered as household gas or burned to create electricity. This energy finds its way into around 60% of homes in Britain.
They call it ‘green gas’, but livestock farming is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in the UK and around the world. Energy companies who use animals to make energy are supporting the factory farming industry, which is a huge problem for the climate.
